A client came on board with a $23,000 liability to CA EDD (California Employment Development Department), and was missing returns.  There was a bank levy that was sent a few days before we were hired that hit his account the day after we did the initial.  The levy captured the entire amount due to the State, but I was able to get the levy release based on his future payroll obligations.  The EDD does not usually release levies for future payroll obligations, but nonetheless we were successful in negotiating a full release of the levy.  Needless to say, this saved the client’s business and he was ecstatic.

A California agriculture company had a tax liability of $97,000.  The client wanted an Installment Agreement with the IRS for the business and no personal tax liens or personal assessments.  We were able to negotiate a partial pay IRS Installment Agreement for the business and no immediate personal assessments or lien filings, if the business stays on the agreement.  This will allow the client to make specific payments to pay down the personal side of the liability when they desire, while the business makes payments.  No personal liens were filed.  The business will now be able to operate and the owners will be able to utilize personal credit without lien issues.

A client came on board with us owing $170,000 for business taxes. The bookkeeper was adamant that the IRS has the incorrect liabilities, but could not get them to reduce it. We were able to correct 2 incorrect CAWR assessments reducing the total business liability by over $67,000. We then were able to get the remaining business liabilities set up onto an Installment Agreement for $1,000 per month.

The IRS also wanted to assess the client, personally, with over $70,000 of taxes from the business. We were able to successfully reduce this to $20,000 and enter this also onto an Installment Agreement of $348 per month.

• The Armed Forces Tax Council administers the operation of military tax programs worldwide and conducts outreach with the IRS to military personnel and their families with tax coordinators for the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, Army and Coast Guard.
• Military-based VITA sites have volunteers who are specifically trained to deal with military related tax issues such as combat zone tax benefits and Earned Income Tax Credit guidelines.
• If you will be filing under the status Married Filing Jointly and you wish to e-file your return, both spouses should be present to sign the required forms. In the event that your spouse cannot be present you should bring a valid power of attorney form, that allows tax preparation, to be used to sign and file the return. A special exception to using a power of attorney is available for spouses in combat zones allowing a spouse to e-file a joint return with only a written statement stating the other spouse is in a combat zone and unable to sign.
